If you already have diabetes you will probably come to realize that you will have to change the way you manage it as you get older. Living with diabetes is challenging and it gets even more difficult as we get older, here are a few practices to consider to prevent diabetes or maintain it at a manageable level.

  • Regular Exercise
The lack of physical exercise and lower energy levels during old age can increase the risk of diabetes or worsen it if the person already has it. Exercise can help reduce glucose levels in the blood by transferring the glucose to the muscles that are working. Some recommended exercises for seniors include walking, dancing, swimming, and light stretching.
  • Maintaining the Proper Diet
To prevent diabetes, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding sugar and processed food is a must. Being overweight and not maintain a proper diet is one of the biggest risk factors for type-2 diabetes. If you already suffer from diabetes your diet becomes more restricted the best course of action would be to consult a nutritionist.
  • Get Better Sleep
Sleep deprivation can impact glucose levels in the body. The lack of sleep can affect the hormones in our bodies including the insulin hormone by promoting insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.
